What is Black Summer ‘91?
The year 1991 was one of intense upheaval for Montreal's Black community, raising numerous issues related to ethnic confrontations, racial profiling, law enforcement, and activism, as well as various social, urban, and cultural challenges. This era symbolized a certain ideal of Pan-Africanism, striving to preserve heritage through archives, images, and historical documents that recount the Afro-Montreal consciousness, identity, and the realities of navigating the Black experience in our contemporary culture.
This project is dedicated to the Black culture of the 1980s and 90s, highlighting the political, social, and activist movements driven by a shared African identity. Black Summer '91 delves into the situations and questions that shaped the memory and collective consciousness of Black people in Montreal, in connection with the international diaspora of African descent.

Black Summer ‘91
Black Summer '91 is an interdisciplinary project created, conceived and conceptualized by Rito Joseph, a lecturer, researcher and historical guide on black history in Montreal, through the Black Montreal Experiences platform. A series of guests are also scheduled to take part in round-table discussions and public conversations.
